Modist Brewing is launching a new series of beers that are made with the help of the brewery’s biggest supporters.
The new small batch series is called the Modist Maker Series. It will feature one-of-a-kind beers brewed with members of the Minneapolis brewery’s beer drinking club – a limited group that gets some early access to beers and other perks.
The first beer in the series was created with a guy named Beau, who really likes hazy, New England IPAs. Dan Wellendorf of Modist told GoMN there will be about 15 beers in this series, and a new one will be released every two months or so.
The first one is a double IPA
Beau and head brewer Keigan Knee teamed up and decided to brew a double IPA (something Modist has never brewed before) that has the haze and soft mouthfeel of the increasingly popular New England IPA style.

The beer is called Misunderstood Genius. It’s made with “a hearty amount of oats,” Chilean barley and Belgian rock candy (this helps make the beer extra boozy). Then it was hopped with Cyro Hops – a “revolutionary lupulin powder” that gives an intense hop flavor and smell, but without strong vegetative flavors, Modist explains.
It’s described as having “heavy flavors and aromas of juicy overripe tangerine, papaya, melon and lime” and is the second booziest beer Modist has ever made. It’s got an ABV of 8.6 percent (Modist’s Lord Humungus was around 11 percent).
Misunderstood Genius will be released in the taproom at noon on Friday. You’ll also be able to buy crowlers of it for $13 – but there are only 300 of them, and there’s a limit of two per person.
More on the Modist Makers
The Modist Makers is the brewery’s beer drinking club. People who pay to join (either $250 or $500) get free beer, the chance to taste limited-release beers early, and other perks.
Unfortunately, those who want to brew and name a beer with Modist are out of luck. The drinking club members who get to brew a Modist Maker Series beer paid $1,000 to join the club – and that level is no longer available.
